Pasadena, CA

As a consultant to Harley Ellis Devereaux, Swire Siegel with Child Development consultant Eric Nelson transformed a paved parking area into an outdoor play environment for infants to 5 year olds. Play areas include outdoor art activity space, a hands-on children’s garden, sand and water play, imaginary play, trike paths, and climbing areas. Trex decks under the canopy of a large existing oak tree are used for quiet reading and manipulative activities. The new smaller parking lot was constructed using the first porous concrete pavement in Pasadena and storm water is designed to be recharged on site. California native plants are primarily used with the addition of plants that have special play value. This project received Gold LEED certification and many awards.
