Families Forward Learning Center

Pasadena, CA

Families Forward Learning Center helps families in poverty and isolation to succeed in school and in life through learning programs for infant to five year olds and their parents. In 2006 the program was able to move to a new location where Swire Siegel as a consultant to Harley Ellis Devereaux along with childcare consultant Eric Nelson transformed a paved parking area into a nature filled Gold-Level Leed Certified Sustainable building and outdoor play environment for infants to 5 year olds.

Outdoor play areas include a multitude of activity spaces such as a hands-on children’s vegetable garden, sand and water play area, art easels and table top activity spaces, building areas, imaginary playhouses, trike paths, and climbing areas. Infant/toddler yard is separated from the 2-5 year olds with an interactive partition, clear easel wall, and climbing element. Trex recycled wood decks under the canopy of trees are used for quiet reading and manipulative activities. The new smaller parking lot was constructed using the first porous concrete pavement every used in Pasadena and storm water is designed to be recharged on site under sand play areas. California native plants are primarily used with the addition of plants that have special play value.
